FATAL ACCIDENT.

A fatal accident occurred hst night on the road between the Bridge a.nd Te Arai. A Maori named Hemi Kakakino, in company with another Native, was riding towards Te Arai, and after crossing the ; bridge the pair commenced lo race their horses. The hor«e Hemi was riding shied or stumbled and he fell off, striking his head with much violence on the hard road. Ihe unfortunate fellow, ivho was of course unconscious, was carried on a stietcher to the Bridge Hotel, where ho rued shortly afterwards. His body was removed this morning to Wliakato, where an ini|iiest was held this afternoon by Mr •i. Booth, S.M.. at the residence of Mr L Ken. As a strange coincidence it is mentioned that yesterday afternoon a European galloping towards the bridge was thrown from his horse at the identical spot and severely st mined. Dr Cole, who happened to be passing at the lime, attended to the man and advised his temporary removal to the Bridge Hotel, whither he was carried on a stretcher. He appeared to he full of liquor, and the doctor gave him an emctie, w Inch relieved his stomach. Dr Cole advised that if his condition did not soon improve, he should immediately be sent on to the hospital, but as that was not done, it is a-bttnied he recovered. The man's name was not known ; he was believed to be a recent arrival in the district.
