LA GRIPPE.

AN EXTENSIVE EPIDEMIC.

[Per R.M.S. Alameda.] Auckland, to-day. An epidemic of la grippe in raging in New York, Washington, and other cities of the United States. In New York schools it is reported that the absentees number 45,000, or 20 per cent, of the enrolled pupils. There are several hundred sick policeman. Many fatalitieß have already occurred, and hundreds of persons have been left delicate. In Philadelphia it is estimated there are between 25,000 and 30,000 people victims of the epidemic. At Washington a large number of Government employes und members of Congress have been compelled to take to their beds. The disease everywhere is reported to be on the increase.
