Wasßanui, to-day. Peculiar accidents happened to two Maoris while tiding some distance from Wanganui.- One of them had strapped to the pommel of his saddle 161 bof blasting powder, which exploded from a spark from his pipa or from friction. Both horses were killed, and the riders were considerably burned and shaken.

George Smith, aged eight and a half years, the son of a minor, was drowned iv dam lit Saddle Hill, Otago, while bathing. The boy got out of his depth. His brother, twelve years of uge, recovered the body after being nearly drowned, but life was extinct.

A sad accident occurred at Hunterville on Thursday afternoon. Mr J, Searles, a settler in Paraekaretn, and well-known in the district, was thrown from his horse on the road near Ellis Valder's store. He was taken to the Argyle Hotel, where he was attended by Dr. Smith, but he never regained consciousness, and died about 8 o'clock the same night. A native boy, Taumata, was burned to death in a tent afc Taupiri. He and another child were got out by the fathpr, To Rahiki. The other child, though badly burned, is recovering.
