[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON. To-day. Mr A. H. Adams, of the Evening Post staff, author of the libretto Hincmoa, hoe been appointed literary secretary to the fi.'rn of Williamson & Musgrove. He leaves lor Sydney in a fortnight. The Union Company's new Bteamer Rotoiti arrived at Hobart last night after a passage of 58 days. She sailed for Dunediu this morning, and after being docked will take up the Onehunjja- Wellington running under the command ot Captain Grant. The Takapuna will be handed over to Captain Robertson. A valuation of the damage by the overflow of sewage into Eing, Havris and Co.'s warehouse is well over £1000, but the Council's valuers put the amount much lower. The matter comes before the Council to-night, but it is practically understood that they accept the liability. CHRISTCHUBCH, To-dat. Further reports from the Chatharas confirm the statement that a large steamer has been seen close to the island, but mentions ! nothing about rockets, and no alarm was felt as to the safety of the vessel. A drizzling rain has set in, promising a good downpour, which is badly needed, j. AUCKLAND. To-day. At the inquest on George O'Connell, a verdict of " Found Drowned " was returned. Constable Henry stated that he had known deceased for many years. He was of intern- ' perate habits, and was separated from his tamilv. Tho manager of the Costley Home stated that O'Connell was in the institution for a month. The night before he left they had had a discussion as to whether suicide was justifiable, and deceased had agreed that it was not justifiable under any circumstances. He was discharged from the Costley Home as not being a suitable subject for charity. ' • DUNEDIN, To-day. In consequence of. the nature of the report by Mr Gilruth on the slaughterhouses round Dunedin, the City Council have decided to issue a warning to all butchers in town that they will refuse licenses to anyone selling meat from the slaughteryards mentioned in the report. Mr Arthur Perry,, solicitor) a very old resident, died this morning. He had been suffering from cancer in the mouth for nine months. He served in the Provincial Council) and took a great interest in acclimatisation and horticultural matters.
