Tii;,' following is a copy of a telegram forwarded to the Secretary of State by the Governor in connection with the death of the Duchess of Teck : "The Premier of New Zealand, on behalf of the Government and people of the colony, desires to express profound sympathy with Her Majesty and Royal Family at the death of Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Teck." The following reply was received : " Your .Lordship's telegram of 28th October lias been communicated to Her Majesty the Queen. I have received Her Majesty's commands. to express her high appreciation of the sympathetic message from the Premier and people of Now Zealand. Chamiieulain." To-day the police received news of the drowning of a man named George Buckingham off Kapiti on Thursday last. Deceased and a man named Charles Low were out together in a fishing boat off the island, when the boat was struck by a squall and capsized. Low was saved, but Buckingham's body has not been seen since. The state of the weather has prevented the news being reported until now. The Conciliation Board have been engaged nil day taking evidence in support of the carpenters' case in the dispute with the builders. Argument in the case of Loughnan v. Dalgety and Co. has been concluded in the Court of Appeal, and judgment reserved. Mrs Pole's boarding house, Grey town, has been burned down. It gwas insured for £■250, and the loss is £150 more. AUCKLAND, To-day. At the Police Court, before Mr Brabant, S.M. , a man named McAmmon was charged with being unlawfully in possession of an illicit still and working the same at Puhipuhi. Mr McAlister, instructed by the Crown Prosecutor, appeared for the Customs Department, and asked for a remand. He said accused had been discovered working the still, and lie believed he was one of a large gang who were carrying on distilling operations in and around the goldfiekls. McAmmon, who is an elderly man, said he was guilty of being in the house, but he never fixed the still there nor made any whisky. The man who did it had cleared off in the steamer when it reached town last night. Accused was remanded for a week. At a large Maori meeting held at Paeroa it was decided to send a delegate to Wellington on Native affairs, and £10 was voted by the tribe towards the expenses of the delegate. Richard Henry Keast, evangelist, appeared at the Police Court yesterday. On this occasion he was charged that he did by certain false pretence, to wit, by pretending a certain letter, which he on June 19th produced to Edward Waters as genuine, did obtain from the same Edward Waters board and lodging amounting to £10. He was committed to trial. At th<! Harbor Board meeting it was decided with respect to the Island mail services that letters be written to the Union Company, Huddart, Parker aud Company, Spreckles and Co., the Nippon Yusen Kaislia, aud other steamship companies, pointing out the advantages and attractions of Auckland as a port, and offering special facilities, NAPIER, To-day. The Chamber of Commerce has agreed with the objection of the Canterbury Chamber as to the abolition of special juries. Objection was taken to the lengthening of the time of the express train from Napier to Palmerston, and it was agreed to ask other Chambers to co-operate in protesting against the Public Companies Accounts Audit Bill. A man named Kdward Harrington, a clerk in the Railway Locomotive Department, left his work saying he felt ill, and shortly afterwards his body, stripped to the shirt, was found floating in the sea in front of the town. A verdict of " Found Drowned" was returned. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Herbert Allandale, who is serving a sentence of 10 years, received at Wellington, escaped from the hard labor gang at Lyttolton yesterday. To meet all responsibilities in the matter of buildings and repairs the Education Board requires ,CH,9SS, exclusive of liabilities of £1097 on the 20th .September. DUNEDIN, To-day. The report of the National Insurance Company shows that the net revenue for the year amounts to 95,497. After paying a dividend of Is 6(1 per share there remains £14610 to be carried forward. At the Presbyterian .Synod the articles of the basis of union with the northern church were completed, no arrangements of importance being made. It was decided, by 65 to 36, to reappoint the Union Committee with instructions to forward the basis as amended to the northern church. A protest signed by 40 ministers aud elders against any overt action on the part of the majority to consummate union on the present basis, and signifying their intention to take all legitimate means to jirevent extension of the church except on a generally satisfactory basis, was handed in. NEW PLYMOUTH, To-day. The Governor has promised to lay the foundation stone of the new Wesleyan Church and open the Industrial Exhibition on December 9th. No further ploughing by the Natives is r cpovteil, but the incessant rain the last day o v two may have caused a cessation of operations.
