Wholesale Lynchings.

New Yokk, Sept. 15.

Intense excitement has been caused at Versailles, Indiana, by a wholesale lynching affair which has occurred there. A mob of 400 strong entered the town on horseback last night, overpowered the gaoler of the local prison, and fired upon five men who were charged with burglary. They then dragged the prisoners to the nearest tree and hangpil them. Two of the men lynched had lieon shot and wounded in several places while attempting to rob a store, only last .Saturday- Another was imprisoned for attempted burglary, and the remaining two were indicted for robbery. It is believed that these two Mere killed by the shots before being dragged out of the prison. For ninny years farmers in the neighborhood have been victimised by outlaws, who are known as " whitec.aps." Old German farmers and their wives have boon tortured and compelled to disclose their savings, and aged German women have been compelled to stand before red-hot stoves. But in all these convictions have seldom followed arrests, and on the present occasion the public were resolved that there should be no risk of similar negative result. This wholesale lynching in a Northern State where even ordinary lynching is uncommon has caused a great sensation. — Keuter.
