A man named Charleston, a self-dubbed " Professor," has been sentenced at the Waipawa Magistrate's Court to 3 months' imprisonment on a charge oi obtaining money by false pretences. From the evidence it appeared that he had gone about the district pretending to cure the ailing, and supplying so-called phrenological charts. It having been asserted in certain quarters that the Premier's statement at Home that the Maoris who formed part of the New Zealand contingent were rangatiras and the descendants of rangitaras was not true, it is the intention of the Natives to prepare a document in which the genealogy of each of the men will be fully set forth, and present it to tile Government. A meeting of ladies interested in cycling was held in Townley's hall on Saturday afternoon, when there was a good attendance and a number of apologies were received from those unable to attend. The meeting was very enthusiastic over the proposal to enlist under the control of the Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. Over thirty names were handed in as members, and when it is generally known that the Amateur Club have decided to admit all members to their sports free, we fully expect to see the membership swell to over 100. Mrs E. D. Smith was elected captain and Miss C'olley hon. sec., pro lem, and an influential committee was elected. It was decided that the ladies should take part in the opening run starting from Miller's corner on Thursday afternoon at 2.30. Messrs R. Cole and J. H. Ormond attended the meeting on behalf of the Amateur Club.
