PARLIAMENTARY NOTES.
.(Parliamentary Reporter.)
Wellington, to-day.
Detective Henderson is through Mr Lewis petitioning the House for an enquiry into the charges preferred against him, resulting in his dismissal from the police force. As seventy-two members either voted or paired in this morning's division, this leaves only the Speaker and Mr Ward unaccounted for. The Government majority may therefore be set down at seven. Now that the Left Wingers have declared themselves in a no confidence motion, it is unlikely that they will be invited to any caucus of the Liberal party in the future. The Committee set tip to consider the Young Persons Protection Act to-day received replies from the Revs. Munro, W. C. Smith, and Wilding (Auckland) and Saunders (Dunedin). The deliberations of the Committee are likely to extend over a month. The Joint Statutes Revision Committee had an important sitting this forenoon. It was decided to recommend that the Debts Limitation Bill, which survived second reading in the. Council yesterday by the Speaker's casting vote, be not allowed to proceed.
In regard to the Supreme Court Act Amendment Bill, the age for the compulsory retirment of Judges hereafter appointed was increased from 65 years to 75, and the other portions of the measure referring to extended powers of Registrars was remitted to the Judges for their opinion.
