VOLUNTEERING
[ A DISCOURAGING STATEMENT. GOVERNMENT WILL NOT PROVIDK MONEY FOR BIG GUNS. Navier, to-day. Colonel Pole-Penton, after inspecting the arbillery volunteers, paid them a high'compliment, but said their guns were useless and their drill obsolete. They could not be properly drilled without modem weapons, ami Micro was no money for the purchase of new guns. Ho therefore hnd to oifer them the alternative of disbanding or forming themselves into a rifle corps. The officers expressed great disappoiutmeut at the decision, as tho Battery baa been kept together and worked hard in expectation of being supplied with modern weapons, but said they would do their best to induce the men to join Uio rifles. It is expected that they will do so, but tho Navals, to whom a similar intimation has been made, are expected to disband. J
