• [Peb Press Association.] WELLINGTON, To-day. Monday next, 30th iaat., being St. Andrew's Day will be observed as holiday hy the Government offices throughout) the colony. Miss A. A. R. Ludford, a, native of Wellington, who has contributed several poems to the New Zealand papers, is among the winners in the prize competitors of " The Golden Penny," published by the London Graphic. The young lady also received from the private secretary to the Queen an acknowledgment with .thanks in reply to a letter congratulating Her Majesty on the 60th year of her reign. The second charge of thefc against Wilkes, ex-house steward of the hospital, has been withdrawn on the ground that it was practically the Bame as the charge on which ho was acquitted. AUCKLAND, To-day. Mrs Yateß, ex- Mayor of Onehnnga, was defeated in the Mayoral election by the retiring Mayor, Mr Sutherland, by 133" votes to 65.
