AUSTRALIANS V. AN ENGLISH ELEVEN. London, Juno 8. The attendance at the match was only moderate. Though the weather was fine the wicket was heavy and in favor of the bowlers. The chief contributors to the Australians' score of 106 were : Giffen 13, Gregory 26, and Trumble 25. Spofforth secured six wickets for 49, Pickett two for 24. When the Englishmen went in they fared worse than the colonials, the last wicket falling at 65. Pickett 20, Trafford 13. Phillips (not out) 11 made the highest scores. Giffen, who did the hat trick, disposed of six men for 20, and Trumble took the other four for 24. The Australians had to go in again on the bad wicket, and lost three men for 29. June 9.— ln the first innings of the Australians Spofforth disposed of Gregory, Hill, Giffen, and Donnan iv five overs for two runs. Trumble played a vigorous innings. In their first essay the Home team had lost eight wickets when the board showed the small total of 26. Giffen bowled Nepean, Perrin, and Rawlins with consecutive balls, and shortly af terwarda Spofforth and Whitehead, the five being dismissed in five overs for five runs. ] _The second innings of the colonials finished for 131, Gregory being the chief scorer with 43. The Englishmen could do nothing in the second innings against the bowling of the Australians, and were all disposed of for 37 runs. The Australians thus won by 135 runs.
