THE CENSUS.
Wellington, to-day. The rough census returns for the provincial district of Auckland show 153,643, an increase of 20,484 as compared with tho last census ; Taranaki 31,243, an iuerease of 9170 ; Hawke's Bay 33,083, an increase of 5407; Wellington 121,Gf>3, an increase of 24,029; Murlbrirongh 12.475, a decronso of 292; Nelson 35,723, tin increase of 953; West land 14,409, a decrease of 1418 ; Canterbury 135.849, an incrense of 7457 ; Otago 163,*863, an increase of 10,766. The returns for Christchuruh and suburbs, which wore delayed owing to the illuess of the enumerator, are now completed, and are : City 17,219 ; four suburban boroughs 24,273 ; other suburbs 9841 ; total of Christchurch and suburbs 51,333, as compared with 47,846 at last census.
