[Peb Press Association.] WELLINGTON, To-day. -In the Supreme Court Read waß acquitted on a charge of false pretences. The charge • of attempted murder against Mrs Locker is -being heard to-day. The drapery shop of Charles Dawers, at Grey town North, was destroyed by five this . morning. The slock was insured for £1300 in the South British, aud the building and ..- fittings forf £150 in the New Zealand. The stock was valued at £1600 and the building at £300. Mr O. A. Deacon, the .well known shipping agent, had a fainting fib at the railway wharf this morning and fell into the harbor. He had a narrow escape of drowning. In fche Supreme Court to-day Camilla ' Looher was charged with the attempted [murder of George Norbury by shooting him with a revolver in Harcourt's auction mart on February the 25th last. Six witnesses were examined up to the luncheon adjournment. Mr Norbury himself is still very weak, and was not present at the trial. It is improbable that he will be called. The case is likely "to extend over to-day._ DUNEDIN, To-day. Mr John Mackay, the new Government printer, has for some years been in charge of the jobbing department connected with the 'Dunedin Evening Star, and was a favorite " for the position in printing circles. • Mr Albert Marks, reader for Hansard, is expected to get the appointment of subeditor of the tri-weekly publication. Two lads named Dawaon and Peterßen left Pork Chalmers for Portobello by water, on reaching which place Petersen found that hie feompanion Dawsou was apparently dead. Medical aid was procured, when it was found that life was extinct. . The episcopal silver jubilee of Dr Neville, the Anglican Bishop, was celebrated by a "social." The Yen. Archdeacon Edwards presented an address on behalf of the clergy, Mr B. C. Haggitt presented an address from ' the laity, signed by about 4000, and handed the Bishop a purse of sovereigns. In the absence of the Mayor through illness, Mr Hardy presented an address from former citizens of Dunedin in Wellington. NAPIER, To-day. The applications for relief at the meeting of the Charitable Aid Board yesterday were far in excess of anything known here before. The circumstances of the applicants and inquiries that have been made show that a great amouut of distress is due to lack of employment. Matters are not helped by the fact that people from the south are coming here hoping to get employment. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The Canterbury Women's Inetitnte resolved to promote a petition to the Government askfrig for the appointment of a suitable Commission to enquire into the present method of treatment of criminals,' and to ask for the support of the various social and political leagues throughout New Zealand in the matter. The unemployed question was considered at some length, and it was resolved to continue agitation on the basis of the resolution passed by the National Council of Women, "That the establishment of co-operative industrial settlements, formed with a farm as a basis, and gradually embracing all kinds of industries, would do much to solve the unemployed difficulty." ■ A motion* was carried in favor of the Hon. Mr McGregor's Divorce Bill. TIMARU, To-day. The body of a woman named Alice Tewaner has been found in the harbor. She - was last seen on Sunday night, and 13 supposed to have committed suicide.
