GISBORNE RACING CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING.
There is every prospect of the Gisborne Racing Club's summer meeting, which commences to-morrow, being favored with fine weather, and judging by the Bplendid acceptance and general entries received, the gathering promises to bo one of tho most successful yet held under the auspices of the club. The easy distance from town and the moderate charges should ensure a largo assemblage on the prettily-situated course at Te Hapara. Every attention has been paid to the general arrangements, and the club is to be complimented on having everything quite up-to-date. The public will have an opportunity of witnessing for the first time in this district a practical trial of the new starting machine, invented by Mr J. Harries, of Gisborne, and which is highly spoken of by horse-owners and trainers. A pleasing feature also will be the presence of the Whataupoko Band. Visitors from Napier and Auckland havo arrived to taUe part iv the gathering, the outside horses competing being Moonraker, Tally-ho, Scot Free and Sequah. Mr Nasmith, secretary, has left no stone unturned to ensure success, and it only needs the weather to remain as at present for his efforts to be rewarded. The programme consists of eight events, the first race — the Flying Handicap — being timed to start at noon. Moonraker and Sequah should between them supply the winner, and the public will perhaps get a good " tip " by noticing the manner in which the pair are supported on the totalisator. Strowan should finish close up. Five remain in the Handicap Hurdles, and a most interesting contest is anticipated. Disturbance and Tally-ho read well in, and if the pace is strong from the jump, t.hey will, I fancy, carry the top-weight off his legs. Next comes the Hack Hurdles, with an entry of eight. Cynosure and Craigard I like best, with the former for choice. The President's Handicap, the principal event of the day, has no less than ten engaged. Moonraker is my choice, with King Cannibal, Perkin, and Retribution fighting out the finish for second place. Ten is again the main in the Hack Flat Race, which should be accounted for by Huna, with Scot Free, Jewel, and Orizaba close up. The Shorts Handicap may be won by Paki Paki or Magoozler, but should Orizaba be reserved for this, he may repay watching. The concluding event — the Park Stakes — looks " good goods " for Sequah, but as he is engaged in two other events he may not start. Retribution and Cocheeo read next beat.— [" Outsider.' 5 ] Acceptances for the firafc clay's racing were received last evening as follow : — Flying Handicap, j-tnile. st lb st lb Moonraker ... 9 8 .Forella ... 7 8 Strowan ... 8 12 Samoa ... 6 7 Booby ... 7 12 Nightingale ... 6 7 Sequah ... 7 10 First Hurdles, 1J miles.
