Press Association— B leottic Telegraph -Copyright BRISBANE, Sept. 29. The boiling-down worka at Barcaldine, to which extensive additions were only recenbly completed, have been destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at £5000, and over 60 men are thrown out of work. SYDNEY. Sept. 28. While the hulk Germ, with a cargo of coal for the Maripoaa, was being towed from Newcastle, she encountered a heavy gale, and foundered off Broken Bay. Larsen, hulk keeper, with bis wife and four young children, and Holmes, a deck hand, were aboard. A heavy sea which came on board before the vessel sank washed Larsen and Holmes overboard before the eyes of the wife of the former. Though the night was very dark, Mrs Larsen succeeded in signalling the tug that the Germ was about to sink, and the remainder of those on board were rescued before the vessel foundered. ADELAIDE, Sbpt. 28. The Government has rejected a private offer to construct a trans-continental land grant railway from the western terminus of the existing lines to the coast of West Australia, the object being to bring the eastern , colonies into more rapid communication with Europe, on the grounds that they consider the scheme impracticable.
