The owners of the Maori King have settled the claims for damages to "meat, resulting from an accident to her refrigerat- w ing machinery in Sydney in Decemberiast by paying 50 per cent. Aug. 11. — The directors of the Manchester -.- Canal Company are conferring with the Agent-General of Victoria relative to a direct line of steamers from Australia to Manchester. At the tallow sales 800 casks were offered, of which 600 were sold, medium mutton brought 21s 6d, medium beef 20s 3d. , - At 'the sale of sheep skins 3778 were offered, of which 3616 were sold. The market showed a general advance of £d to§d, v while good short wools brought Jd dearer. Australian butter is quoted at 85s to 90s. "-"^ A portion of the cattle by the Echuca sold at s^d per lb. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. has received the following commercial cable, dated London, 9th August : — Frozen .meat ; Mutton market better T Canterbury mutton is worth 3§d per lb, Wellington mutton 3§d per lb. Sheepskins : There is a good demand at a farthing higher.
