FATAL FIRE.
TWO MEN BURNED TO DEATH. Palmerston North, to-day. The Empire Hotel was burned down between land 2 a.m. Most of the inmates had a narrow escape. Two men were burned to death while attempting to escape, one was Walker, a hawker, recently from Victoria, aged 34, aud the other an old man named Maurice Connell. The origin of the fire is unknown. A few minutes after a second fire broke out ia the Square, destroying the ahop3 of Harvey (fruiterer), Haydn (grocer), tho offices of Guy and Haggitt (solicitors), and the Drainage Board Engineer. Very little was saved. The bodies were recovered this morning, but were unrecognisable. Te Aro House was saved with difficulty by tho exertions of the Brigade. The iasuraaces were £930 ia the Loadoa and Lancashire, £550 in the Imperial, £1300 iv the Commercial Union, £150 in the National, £100 in the Alliance, and £250 in the New Zealand.
