A Nelson paper says that :— As the Rev Mr Harker was returning to Motuaka from Dovedale on Monday last, he had a narrow escape from drowning when crossing the Rosedale creek in Ngatimoti, which was in high flood. Owing to the horse getting into deep water, he must have lost his footing, for he swerved round and was carried under the footbridge. Mr Harker, who was in the sulky, just managed to catch the wire of the bridge and raise himself on to the bridge. The horse took the sulky some little distance down the creek, when, with the speedy assistance of Messrs Lines and White, he was driven on to the shingle beach, and, going some distance into the dreek, Mr Lines got the horse and sulky out safely on the opposite side, but everything movable was swept out of the sulky and carried down stream.
