V.R.C. WINTER MEETING.

Melbourne July 13. At the.V.R.C. winter meeting there was a large attendance, and the weather was fine. IThe chief event was the Great National Steeplechase which resulted : — Daitnio (Bartoun) 1 Dart (Underwood) 2 Campaspe (Howe) 3 — The other starters were Strike, Knibsworth, Flat-Iron, Larrikin, Floater, Timoni, Moondah, Cerberus, Medicine, Boltoro, Romsdale, J0. 1., Spaniker, Banshee, and Old Judge. The betting was 6 to 1 against Daitnio and Boltoro, 7 to 1 Floater, 10 to 1 Medicine. After the fly fell J. 0.1, took command and led over the first fence at the back of the course. The first round Floater fell and shortly after Knibs worth, Spaniker, and Boltoro came down. Passing the stand the second time, Daimio had a strong lead from Moondah and Timoni. The latter came to grief on the last round, and Daimio came to the home turn in a canter, and won easily by five lengths from Dart. Time, 6 mm. 35 l-4th Eecs.
