The market for silver stocks is again very active. Large sales have been effected, and there is an advance all round. Central Broken Hill have, risen five shillings, and the tone- at closing to-day was strong. . In consequence of the continued cold dry weather several lines of produce are hardening. . Sales have been effected, of bran and <^£ polard at 9d per bushel, maize 2s 3d, oats '^ (prime feed) 2s, and potatoes have advanced os. . May 4.— The banking returns for the Australian colonies show the position to; be . much strengthened since 1893, when there was £14 proprietary capital per £100, as compared with £22 per £100 now. The nett earnings shown by the last two halfyearly dividend payments by banks not reconstructed decreased, as compared with 1893, by £1,637,000, and the reconstructed banks by £281,000. Approximately the dividends paid on the unreconstructed banks paid-up capital was reduced from 10 "9 per cent, to 6*5, and in the case of the re- _^ a constructed banks from 10"9 to 2:6. 1m
Adelaide, June 4.
There have been • some large sales of wheat for export to other colonies, including 10,000 bags ab 3s per bushel for shipment to New Zealand. The latter colony is also making large purchases of flour.
