MELBOURNE, June 1.

The death is announced of Dr. Dobson, M.L.C., brother of the Chief Justice of Tasmania.

A manifesto has been issued by the Protection Association and representatives of various industries affected, protesting against many of the recommendations of the Tariff Commissioners. It also decided upon a schedule of recommendations and objections, and these will be forwarded to all the members of the Legislative Assembly as the tariff of each trade comes forward in Parliament.

June 3.— Obituary: Violet Varley (Mrs J. Tapley), the well-known actress. She died in child-birth.

SYDNEY, June 2,

Messrs East and May's mill at Tamora, in which a very large stock of flour was stored in anticipation of a rise, was completely destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at between £4000 and £5000. The property is owned by the Joint Stock Bank, on which the National Insurance Company of New Zealand have a line of £1700.

June 3. — The New Hebrides Synod has resolved that, seeing the matter of obtaining a mission steamer has been taken out of its hands by the action of the Victorian Foreign Mission Committee, and as the suitability of the vessel is not assured, it will leave the matter for the present in the hands of the Victorian Committee to do the best in the interests of all concerned. The Revs. Lamb and Watt, of New Zealand, and Revs. Robertson and McDonald, of Canada, dissented from the resolution.

PERTH, June 3,

An important- discovery is reported from a locality 40 miles north-west of Co.blgardie, where Menzies and party, prospectors, found four reefs running parallel, and intercepted by a cross reef. This country has hitherto been untried. The cross reef is very. rich.
