SEVERE FIGHTING. ' LOSS OF LIFE ON BOTH SIDES. ;' Caioutta, April 14. Yesterday a number of the British forces with guides occupied the hills beyond the Panjkora river, but a large force of the enemy compelled them to retire, which they did in excellent order. Heavy guns covered the retreat, but eventually the enemy came. within 300 yards. Colonel Battye was killed, and there were a few other casualties on the British side.' April 15.— C01. Battye was killed just as the detachment regained camp. The Khan of Dir has captured the fort of Dir, and has taken Urara. Khan's brother, Monaden, prisoner. Sepoys, in an attempt to croBS the Panjkora river, to reconnoitre, were compelled to retire. One British officer was killed and two wounded. The casualties I among the Sepoys numbered seventeen." The | latter were separated from the main body owing to the enemy destroying the pontoon bridge by means of floating enormous logs down the river. The British f crces while retreating inflicted heavy loss on the enemy. > The friendly Khan of Dir has sant 2,000 men to relieve Mr Robertson at Chitral. April 16.— Lieutenant Fowler and the rest of the prisoners taken, by Umra have reached the British camp. A thousand of Umra's personal followers have returned to their homes. Umra lost 400 men at Panjkora. Nine thousand Mainlands and Salazais are massed'at Mundiak. " TWo; thousand men of the second brigade wiH push for ward at once for Chitral, and the main body. .crosses the Panjkora tomorrow. . -•' ' ':. ' ■
