Ormond School Picnic.
The annual treat to the pupils of the Oimond school was held on Boxing Day, and this year took the form of a monster picnic at 41 The Willows," kindly placed at the service of the School Committee by (1. Scott, Es<j., its genial proprietor. At the time agreed upon the scholars began to muster at the school, where they took their seats in conveyances kindly lent for the purpose by Messrs A. Bond, Wm. Wells, J. Benson, H. Rowe, J. White, W. F Hatton, E. C. Whitlock, D. McMillan and others, and headed by the Ormond Brass Band, and accompanied and followed by numerous privato vehicles, wended their way to the trysting-place— a pretty Bpot iv a bend of the river Waipaoa, abreast of the homestead, with an abundance of shade, which our Christmas weather this year rendered an absolute necessity. The drive was not the least enjoyable part of the outing, for it was a lovdy morning, the rays of the bright sun being just tempered by a gentle hieeze, and the people of Ormond tcok advantage of the beautiful weather and its beiDg a holiday, and turned out en masse. The grounds reached, the time passed quickly and pleasantly. Various contests were engaged by the young folk for prizes kindly donated by friends in Giaborne and district, to whom the Committee tender their hearty thanks. The Band during the day contributed to the general enjoyment by rendering an excellent selection of music, highly creditable to its members and to the Bandmaster, Mr .James Chrisp, of Gisborne. Duriug the afternoon the attendance, we believe, was fully 400. The caterer for the day was Mr W. C. Nesbitt, and it may be taken for granted that he did his level best to give satisfaction. Before leaving the grounds the company were called upon by Mr Vosper, Chaiiman of the School Committee, to accord hearty cheers to Mr and Mrs Scott and family tor the use of the lovely grounds and Lheir presence at the picnic, to the Brass Band for their contribution of cheerful and pleasant music, and to all and sundry who had so kindly assisted to render the outing so successful and enjoyable. Mr Scott, in replying, euid that though it was the first, he hoped it would not be the last school picnic held there, and concluded by wishing all present a " Happy New Year." The large liSHomblage'Nhen wended their way homeward. The Committee desires to heartily thank Mr Scott for the use of the grounds ; Mr Bond, and the other gentlemen enumerated above, for the use of their waggons, coaches, and other vehicles for transport purposes ; th<: Ormond Baud for their services so cheerfully rendered ; the donors of prizes for their liberality ; and all the ladies and gentlemen, who on the ground assisted in carrying out the programme of sports, and in attending to the children and vititors.— Contributed.
Amongst other tilings, Mr C. Dean Pitt offers by auction to-morrow a quantity of line grapes and some household furniture.
