♦ Press Association -Electric Telegraph -Copyright SYDNEY, Dec. 24. The Sydney Daily Telegraph publishes a long letter from New Zealand, signed Mark Cohen, on the subject of women's suffrage. The writer defines what, during the recent debate in the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales legislators characterised as a leap in the dark in New Zealand, and denounces the detractors of Mrs Yates, whom he says is a good speaker and a clear thinker. He begs New South Wales people to commence agitating for the enfranchisement of women. Tlx: H'n. W. P Uee.vcp. during his tour through South Aua'caUa, Victoria, and New South Wales, collected a considerable amount of information on r.he vil!;\gfi settlement schemes in those colonies. He was particularly impressed with the utility of the South Australian village settlements. He thinks that New Zealand has not much to learn from the sister colonic-s in regards to hospital and charitable aid administration. The Hon. 'f. J. Byrnes, Attorney-Genera! of Queensland, and the Hon. Mr Want, Attorney-General of New South Wales, were passengers by the Al&crjeda, which left yesterday for Auckland. A hay shed on a station near Carcoar was burned to the ground. Watchmen pursued two men whom they saw coming out of the shed, and fired a revolver over their heads to make them surrender. One of the fugitives, a man named Turner, thereupon turned and shot one of the watchmen through the thigh.
