The writer defines what, during the recent debate in the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales legislators characterised as a leap in the dark in New Zealand, and denounces the detractors of Mrs Yates, whom he says is a good speaker and a clear thinker. He begs New South Wales people to commence agitating for the enfranchisement of women. Tlx: H'n. W. He was particularly impressed with the utility of the South Australian village settlements. He thinks that New Zealand has not much to learn from the sister colonic-s in regards to hospital and charitable aid administration. The Hon. 'f. J. Byrnes, Attorney-Genera! of Queensland, and the Hon. Mr Want, Attorney-General of New South Wales, were passengers by the Al&crjeda, which left yesterday for Auckland. A hay shed on a station near Carcoar was burned to the ground. Watchmen pursued two men whom they saw coming out of the shed, and fired a revolver over their heads to make them surrender. One of the fugitives, a man named Turner, thereupon turned and shot one of the watchmen through the thigh.
