A meeting of the Hawke's Bay Philosophical Society was held last night, when the Rev. W. Colenso, F.R.S., was presented with a portrait of himself in oils, painted by Herr Lindauer. The presentation was made in recognition of the valuable services rendered to the Institute by Mr Colenso's scientific researches. The reverend gentleman, in returning thanks, said the coming moath of December would make sixty years since he first came to Hawke'o Bay, having landed in company with the late Bishop Williams, first Bishop of Waiapu, and also the Bishop elect, who then was a mere boy. In concluding a feeling speech, he asked the Society to accept the picture as a present from himself. A four-roomed cottage, owned and occupied by James Boyle, Sale street, was destroyed by fire. The insurance on the house is £150, and on the furniture £50, both in the Norwich Union. A very heavy nor' westerly gale blew early this morning. The scow Irene, laden with timber, dragged her moorings, and the vessel came close iuaide the breakwater. Subsequently the Irene was towed to an anchorage, being brought later into the inner harbor. PALMERSTON NORTH. To-day. Thackers 1 boot shop was gutted by fire this morning, the ladies show room being destroyed, and stock valued at £200 rendered entirely useless for sale. Grubb's (confectioner) and Baker (solicitor) adjoining were damaged by water. The insurances on Thackers 1 shop was £300 in the Alliance office, and stock £200 in the Commercial Union and £250 in the Alliance. Urubb's stock £30 in the National, Bakers building £450 in the New Zealand, fixings, books, etc., £100 in same office.
