The Chamber of Commerce meeta to-night. The Fire Brigade meet for inspection to-night. By the s.s. Australia, which arrived from Auckland last night, Messrs Common, Shelinn and Co. received a consignment of 18 very choice young cattle. These comprise 0 pure Jersey heifers m calf, 4 shorthorn cows, and 8 grade heifers. By advertisement it will be seen that these cattle will be submitted te public auction on Saturday, September Ist, at the Gisborne wool stores. Yesterday Const. Norman succeeded m arresting the Native, Pekama te Rau, at WhaUtutu, who is " wanted " by the police fur forgery of a cheque for £40 0s 6d, Mr James Tome's name being used m connection with the forgery. The accused waa brought up at the 8. M. Court, and on the application of Sergt. -Major Moore a remand was granted until next Wednesday by Mr Booth, S.M. About half-past ten o'clock last night a (lie occurred m the stable attached to the Gisborne Hotel. The firebells pealed out an alarm, and m response the members of the Fire Brigade were soon on the spot. Th* building, wliich was roofed with corrugated iron, contained a quantity of hay, which was destroyed. The members of the Bri gade succeeded m extinguishing the flames m a very short time. The total damage is about £"25. There was no insurance. In our advertising columns Dr Bnrnaby announces a course of lectures m Wesieyan schoolroom, commencing on Bunday evening after Church service. On Monday evening he will deliver the famous lecture of " Love. Courtship, and Marriage" illustrated by hundreds of heads of celebrated and notorious characters. He also announces that he will delineate character cupability blindfolded on the stage. We are assured that Dr Burnaby is unique m his line, and from press notices elsewhere his entertainments appear to have been received with great favor. Messrs Common, Shelton k Co. report : — At our monthly sale at Waerenga-a-hika yesterday, th* cattle advertised were all brought forward, and with the exception of five cows were sold at an advance m price on late quotations. There was a large attendance of buyers, and competition was spirited throughout the sale. The dairy cattle were not of a good class. Twenty cows were yarded, and 15 sold under the hammer at prices varying from £4 to £7 2s 6d. Fifty-six head of young cattle sold as follows : weanen to 9 and 10 months old calves 25s to 425, yearlings 51s, two-year-old steers 67s 6d to 80s, three year steers m good condition £5 ss, store cows 52s 6d to 60s. There were only a small number of fat cattle yarded, light weight steers sold at £6 and £6 ss, coarse bush bullocks £4 to £7 15s. A pen of aged ewes with early lambs at aide 7s 6d the couple, and the pigs were a wellbred lot and sold at full values. Our next sale will be held on Wednesday, September 28th. Mr D. M. ChVs weekly report:— At Thursday's auction sale there was a good attendance and a fair amount of business done. Prices for produce remain about the same aa last week, with the exception of butter, which has been very scarce and advanced to Is per lb m boxes, package extra. Potatoes also advanced a little, fetching 7a per sack for Canterbury and 4i 6d to 5s for Patutahi, Oamarn prime quality £3 10s per ton, kidney seed 13s per sack and small bags Id to l£d per lb ; Hobart apples 6s 6d te 8s 6d per case, Sydney oranges 4s to 5s per case, Tahiti oranges 7b to 8s per case. Local ham and bacon 6Jd to 7d, Canterbury ham and bacon by the case, Bsd, sides *7id, hams 9Jd. Maize 2s 3d to 2s 6d per bushel, oats 2s 3d to 2s 6d per bushel, bran 7s per sack, pollard 9s per sack, wheat 3s per bushel, barley 3s 3d per bushel, chaff 2s to 2s 3d per sack, and some extra fine quality 3s per sack. Fowls, m good demand, realised Is 7d to Is lOd each, turkeys 3s 3d to 3s Gd, ducks Is 7d.
