ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT CARNOT.

FIRING THE ITALIAN QUARTER. Paris, June 25,

The inhabitants of Lyons are firing the Italian quarter of the city, shouting " We avenge Carnot."

June 26. — An eye-witness of the assassination says M. Carnot had just ordered the escort to fall to the rear and " allow these good people to shake hands." The same instant Santo advanced smilingly, Carnot stretching out his hand, which Santo gripped with his left, and drove a Catalan dagger into the body up to the hilt.

Upon receipt of the news the theatres in Paris, Vienna, and Borne were closed.

M. Cassimer Perier in the Chamber announced the death of the President, members standing bare-headed. The scene was extremely impressive. The Chamber at once adjourned.

The American Congress, after agreeing to the message of condolence, adjourned. The Premier of Italy announced the news in the House with tears. It was decided to drape the Chamber for the remainder of the eession as a tribute of respect, which has hitherto only been paid to members of the reigning family. The President's body will be brought to Paris by nighb, in order to avoid inflaming the populace.

It is now reported that the death agony was protracted, and M. Carnot expired after a terrible struggle to breathe, which caused the wound to re-open. His last words were " I am grateful, very grateful," referring to the efforts of his friends to save his life.

The streets of Lyons were strewn with goods taken during the pillage of the residences of Italians, and the troops had to be called out to repress the outrages of the mob. The police were compelled to release those arrested to appease the mob,?and the incendiary fires have been quenched.

The Italian Consulate at Grenoble was sacked. The mob, failing to effect an entrance by the door, stormed the windows with the help of ladders.

It appears that M. Carnot had daily received threatening letters since the execution of Vaillanb.

Later.— The body of President Carnot reached the city at 3 o'clock this morning, and is lying in the reception room at the Elysee Palace. The mob attacked the Italian residents in Marseilles, and the police were ordered out to quell the disturbance. Many French employers are dismissing Italian workmen. Santo, the assassin, is a journeyman baker. London, June 25. Sir W. V. Harcourt intends to move that an address be presented to the Queen depldring the murder of M, Carnot and expressing the abhorrence of the English nation at the crime and their sympathy with France. June 26. — The Prince of Wales, addressing a meeting, expressed sympathy with the French nation at the loss of its President.

In the House ot Lords the Premier lias given notice of a similar motion of condolence to that moved in the House by the Chancellor.

Parliament did not adjourn in consequence of M. Carnot's death, as precedent did not admit such a course, though both Bides of the House wished to do so.

It is expected the Speaker and a deputation of members will attend the funeral, which will probably take place on Sunday. " Wellington, to-day.

The principal municipal corporations of New Zealand are sending an expression of sympathy to Madame Carnot through Mr Navers, Acting French Consul.
