TURANGANUI V. PIRATES. (Feok Oub Own Correspondent.) "' Napier, To-day. The Turanganui-Pirate match was played I' at Farndon yesterday afternoon. The L weather was splendid, but the ground rather heavy. A fair number of spectators were present. The game was a rough one, the Pirates being evidently determined to win the match at any cost. The visitors are disgusted with the treatment they received at the hands of the Pirates. • FIBST SPELL. 3j*lay m the first spell was very even, the only score recorded being a try, secured by Eaton. Burns failed at goal. Turanganui were playing a fine game, their backs making bo mistakes and forwards packing smartly. SECOND SPELL. From a passing run Martin scored, and . Burns took the kick, but hit the upright. Flay now became fast and furious and very unfriendly. Loomb, towards the close of the match, made a fine run scoring near the posts, > Burns converting. A few minutes after. Burns ran m and added the major points, and the game resulted m a win for Turanganui by 16 points to nil. .The winners, one and all, played a great game, having all the best of the second spelL The match against Napier to-morrow is expected to be a bis struggle. Napier's team is the best possible, including Cockrof t, . the New Zealand rep. The. recreation gronnd is greasy. A half-holiday will be observed. The Napier forwards are very heavy. The boys received a rough handling m the Pirate match, and m consequence are . stiff and sore. So far the matches have resulted m no accidents to the team.
« Sydney, June 25. ? At a, .meeting of the Rugby Union it was . decided that the team to play m New Zealand shell leave for Auckland on August 18th, instead of August 25th.
The annual match between the Veterans of Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay will take place next Tuesday, 3rd July, at Captain Tucker's paddock. The Poverty Bay team will be picked from the following : — Messrs Trotter, Fergusson, A. Rees, Peacock, A. B. Williams, L. Cotterili, Bull, Cuthbert, Colebourne, W. Orr, Newton, W. Fraser, K. Williams, W. Martin, C. Lewis, Begnall ( Waipiro), P. 8. Reaney, A. Smith, Kennedy, 7. Dunlop, and Rev. H. Williams. If any of the above cannot play they would oblige by letting the Hon. Sec. of the Rugby Union know. ,
