Death and Estate Duties Bill.
London, June 23. The Agents-General of the colonies reserve their assent to the Chancellor's compromise respecting the death duties, pending their hearing the exact terms of the amendment, and they have plainly assured Sir W. . Harcourt that he has no right to tax HI property situated m the colonies. The Agents fear that the acceptance of the com* promise will admit the principle of the scheme. The House of Commons m Committee have, by a majority of 47, sanctioned a graduated estate duty reaching 8 per cent, when the value of the estate is over a 1 million. The St. James Gazette considers that the Chancellor of the Exchequer has climbed down with regard to the death duties. The Daily Chronicle regretslthat the colonies do not propose the imnoioa of a heavy tax on absentees, and ataWttiat the Chancellor of the Exchequer's co/acessiMi '■:
