Numerous complaints have been made of late, from residents both m the borough and suburbs, of the absence of lights on traps being driven after dark. Wehave again tocompliment Judge Barton on the settlement of another case. This morning a decree for validation of Wharekopae No. 1 B block was passed at the sitting of the Validation Court. A meeting of gentlemen members, also of intending members, of the St. John's Ambulance Association is announced for Wednesday evening next at 7.30 o'clock, at the Fire Brigade station. The damage done to the Napier breakwater by the heavy weather of last week, it is said, will cost between £15.000 and £20,000 to repair. A London cable informs us that H.R.H. the Duchess of York gave birth to a son at 10 o'clock on Friday night. Both illustrious individuals are reported to be doing well. On Saturday at; about five o'clock the firebell pealed out an unwelcome alarm, but those curious to know the location and extent of the fire, were pleasurably disappointed to learn that it was only the chimney of a shop adjoining Mr Whinray's establishment. Mr Samuel Evinson, landlord of the Rangatira Hotel died last night, and an inquest has been arranged for to-morrow. The deceased was formerly colour-sergeant m the 65th regiment, and served during the Maori war. We remind our readers of the entertain, ment m the Academy of Music this evening, when the Fakir of Oolu and his talented company will present a very appreciable programme. As it is not often an opportunity occurs here of witnessing an entertainment of such a special nature, there should be crowded houses both this and to-morrow evening. A bonus of £1,750 is offered for a machine or process for dressing New Zealand hemp (Phormium lenaxj which shall bean improvement on the machines or processes now iv use, and which shall, after trial, be found to materially reduce the cost of production, improve the product, or increase the quantity of dressed fibre. The above, as well as the conditions under which the bonus is offered, appears m the Gazette of the 14th inst. Our correspondent with the Turanganui football team wires this afternoon : — " The Turanganui-Pirate match takes place at Farndon this afternoon. The weather is splendid, bub the ground heavy. A close game is anticipated. The team are all m goodyform and confident of success." A description of their victory over the Caledonian Club on Saturday, whom they beat by 13 points to 9, will be found on our fourth page. A plumber by trade named Percy Green who was employed by Mr Hall of the Gisborne Plumbing Works Ruccumbed to typhoid fever at the Hospital this morning. The deceased was taken ill at a boarding house, where he had been staying, but waß removed to the Hospital last Sunday week. He was a good workman, aud was only 24 years of age. His parents reside m Auckland where the unfortunate young man was well known— especially m football circles. The Rev. W. Morley of the Wesleyan General Conference gave two very impressive and eloquent sermons to large congregations at Wesley Church yesterday. An address was also given to the children both m t<he morning and m the afternoon. This evening Mr Morley gives his lecture on " What I saw and heard m America." This lecture has been delivered m the principal cities of the Australasian Colonies to large audiencos, and has always given the greatest pleasure. We anticipate for all who hear it this evening a treat not often enjoyed by a Gisborne audience. His worship the Mayor takes the Chair at 8 p.m. It is with regret that we have to chronicle the death of Mr Louis Stevens, of Patutahi, at the age of 45 years. Mr Stevens was a man highly respected, and was justly esteemed for his good qualities. Some sixteen years ago he arrived here from Napier, and settled down at Patutahi, opening a store and bakery m |hat district, where he resided up to the time of his demise. He took an active interest m Sunday school work, and was superintendent of the school which was held on Sunday mornings m the Patutahi public hall. He was very popular m the district, and his cheerful manner and good naturedness endeared him to all. Mr Stevens married a daughter of Mr Robert Craill, and has a family of seven children, all of tender years, to whom we offer our sincere condolence m their bereavement. The adjourned meeting m connection with the formation of a branch of St. John's Ambulance Association was held on Saturday afternoon. There was again a large attendance of| ladies— The following Committee was appointed :— Mesdames Watson, Webb, Ryburn, Bull, Townley, H. Williams, Hozier, and Beswick, Rev. Ryburn, Messrs I Parker, H. Bull, Mann, and Townley. A working committee was appointed to make arrangements for obtaining the necessary material. The subscription payable m advance, fixed at 5s for the course of lectures and 2s 6d extra to all those who desired to go m for the examinations. Two classes have been formed for the ladies, each consisting of thirty members, and the lectures will commence immediately the necessary material is obtained. The class for men is not yet complete, but the working committee hope to have it formed during the coming week, an advertisement bearing on this appears elsewhere.
