THE RAINFALL.
The amount of rainfall m 24 hours measOTodat 9 o'clock this morning was 7 50 inches This a* by far the heaviest recorded during the last 17 years, though it may have been ■equalled or even exceeded m January, 1876, 'when the amount registered for the month at Wairakaia was 22 -85 inches. The greatest amounts for periods of 24 hours hitherto recorded m Gisborne are the following, viz,, Oct. 27, 1880 - * 5-48 inches April 16, 1883 - - 874 „ Feb. 20, 1892 - - 366 „ March 21, 1886 - - 3-33 „ April 10, 1886 - - 332 „ June 7, 1893 - - 330 „ Dec. 5, 1893 - - 300 „ The amount recorded yesterday morning was 1 '39 inches. This had fallen during the previous 12 faourß, so that the amount which bad fallen during the 36 hours preceding 9 o'clock this morning was 8 - 89 inches.
