Traction Engine Driver Prosecuted.

Christchurch, to-day. At the Police Court to-day, John Evana was charged with driving a traction engine along the road, without having men travelling m front and rear of the engine to pre. vent accidents. <

The defence was that when horses ap. proached, the defendant always stopped tha engine. His assistant, if necessary, led their horse past.

A quantity of evidence was given to show that this practice obviated the necessity of ™ ng ?i en ia front and r ear of the engine. The Magistrate said the Act had not been complied with, and he was bound to convict, but at the request of defendant's counsel made the fine £5, to enable an appeal to be made to the Supreme Court.
