At the Supreme Court to-day, Farquhar Mackenzie, of Cromarty, Preservation Inlet, was fined £25 for libelling one Sherlock, a hotelkeeper there, by writing a letter^which the defendant got another man to sign, alleging.that Sherlock was m illegal posses, sion of a watch belonging to the signatory, who denied that -he had written or instigated the letter, which was sent to the police. Mr Justice Denniston granted to-day a mandamus (by consent) ordering the Invercargill Licensing Committee to hear and determine the application of T. A. Patchett for a license for the Stag's Head Hotel. GREYMOUTH, Thursday. Mr A. R. Guinness was presented this evening with a testimonial and a purse of 100 sovereigns before leaving for Parliament. About 60 leading townsmen were present on the occasion. The Mayor made the present* ation m an eulogistic speech, and Mr Guinness suitably replied. TIMARU, Thursday. At the Supreme Court yesterday, the secretary and two old members of the Harbor Board were cross-examined on affidavits by Mr Joynt, counsel for defendants, m the case of the Harbor Board v. the Railway Commissioners, re their recollections of the agreement made by Mr Oliver when Minister for Public Works m 1881, regarding the .shingle accumulation. The evidence was taken for use m the trial at Christchurch. OAMARU, Thursday. The house of 4 farmer at Waifcaki South was broken into the other day m the absence of the proprietor, and a gold watch and a sum of money stolen. The police, acting upon a description given, arrested a man at Hampden to-night. The watch had been sold m Oamaru. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. At the meeting of the Education Board to-day the following motion was lost on the casting voting of the Chairman :— " That tbe School Committees of West Christ, church, East Christchurch, and Sydenham, and the principal of the Normal School be requested to arrange modifications of their staffs and their salaries, re* I diicing the outlay of their respective schools by 2fc per cent., to take effect from October 14th next." It was stated that the salaries paid to East Christchurch amounted to £3031 7s sd, to West Christchurch £2519 16s 7d, to the Normal £2136 lis, and to the Sydenham school £2562 15a 98 ; a total of £10,248.

Mr W. M. Collins, one of the members for Christchurch, was entertained to-night at a complimentary social.
