Emperor William has informed the officials of the Foreign Office that Germany's interests m the Samoan islands will not be abandoned under any circumstances. Japanese labor has been imported into Fiji by the Colonial Sugar Refining Company for work on its plantations throughout the group. The s.s. Sagamaru brought 300 from Japan, who were drafted to different stations by the steamers Maori and Marama. The men are spoken of as being of splendid physique, and admirably adapted for this, kind of work. The downfall of the Casimer Perier, Prime Minister of France, was brought about to a : great extent by Roman Catholic influence. '< At the opening of Jthe exhibition m Lyons on April 30th, the Prime Minister met with a hostile reception from the Catholics m the streets, caused by the recent suspension of the stipend of the Archbishop of Lyons on account of his utterances m regard to the Government measures, notably his denunciation of the law for the maintenance of the churches., During the disturbance twenty people were arrested, but afterwards liberated. The clergy of Lyons were not present at the official reception of the Ministers.
