The mails which left Auckland by the Alameda on 21sb April arrived m London on the afternoon of Wednesday last. 1 Notices appear m the Gazette revoking the interpreters' licenses granted to William Williams, of Patea, and Charles Brown, of New Plymouth, and removing them from the office of interpreter under the Native Land Court Act, 1886. Broftn is also removed from the Commission of the Peace. In the Appeal Court to-day Mr Fisher appeared m support of a motion to make absolute the decree nisi striking Alfred John Burgess, solicitor off the rolls. Counsel explained that Burgess was charged with J conspiracy by threatening to accuse a certain ( person with having committed an abominable l offence. The case was tried at the last sitting of the Supreme Court m Christchurch, when the accused was convicted and awarded a term of imprisonment. The Chief Justice said there was no reason to suppose the verdict of the jury was not justified by the evidence, and he was satisfied Burgess should be struck off the rolls. Judges Conolly and Richmond concurred. Judge Denniston, before whom the case was tried, 'said there was not the slightest doubt.at any stage of the proceed, ings of the guilt of Burgess, although only charged with a misdemeanour. Practically the offence of which he was convicted was a serious felony of making threats to obtain money by charging a person with a crime. Ihe rule was accordingly made absolute. , T _ . Bold, Inspector of Telegraphs for Napier and East Coast districts, was presented with a soup tureen, spirit kettle, and fish slice and fork, on the occasion of his leaving the Napier telegraph district.
