Mr Carroll at Patutaht.

« (FROM A CO-RESPONDENT.'.) Mr Carroll addressed the electors, including a number of ladies, at Patutalu last night, Mr T W. Bilham being in the chair. Mr Carroll met with a good reception. He dealt principally with the land question, referring generally to t he Government policy. He spoke highly of the colonizing policy of the Government in the North Island, which had beeu more liberally dealt with than by any other Government in. respect to expenditure for roads and bridges to open up the country. districts like this one had had attention turned to them, and it was the intention of the Government to make up for the previous neglcot of them, A strong factor in the settlemolit of the North Island wap tho Native land question. He explained tho various Acts brought in on this question and their effect. It was time the seven millions of acres of unproductive Native land should be made productive, and the Government intended to effect this in the most equitable manner. Coming to personal matters, Mr Carroll said much had been made against him on the score of his refusing to pay rates. After explaining the position, he offered to resign his trusteeship iv favor of any person in this district who would undertake to pay the back rates out of his own pocket. Of course in future (by the Act passed hist session) tho rates would b 6 payable. In reply to Mr Breiguan, Air Carroll said he regretted the Rees-Cadman episode. The matter had been threshed out in tribunals outside Parliament. To a further question as to whether- ho would favor Sir Robert Stout or Mr Seddou, M r Carroll replied he was a member of tho Seddon Government.
