GOVERNMENT RAILWAYS BILL.
THIRD READING CARRIED. Wellington, to-day. — On the House resuming at 7.30 the Government Railways Bill was recommended, and the following new clause inserted, " Upon any vacancy occurring in the oflice of the Commissioners by elHuxion of time the Governor-in-Council may from time to time appoint any person to fill such vacancy." After a short debate the third reading was carried by 31 to 30, and the Bill passed. Noes (30), Allen, Bruce, Buchanan, Buckland, Buick, Dawson, Duthie, Fergus, Fish, Fisher, Hall, Hamlin, Harkness, Lake, Mackenzie M. J. S., McKenzie T., McGuire, Meredith, Mitchelson, Moore, Newman, Rhodes, Richardson, Rolleston, Russell, Saunders, Swan, Valentine, Wilson, Wright. Pairs, (Ayes) Reeves, Kapa, Stout. (Noes), Taipua, Cairncross, and Jas. Mills. Experts gave evidence before the Opium Commission that a hundred million rupees would not supply the loss to India if the opium traffic were suppressed.
