"A Traveller."

Wellington, to-day. — A point of some importance to the liquor trade was mentioned in the Resident's Magistrate's Court to-day. The licensee of the Metropolitan Hotel was summoned for Sunday trading, and it was proved that a man calling for drink had stated in reply to the barman that he was a traveller and came from the Hutt, whereas he was living in town and made an untruthful statement. The defence relied on this evidence for acquittal, but Mr Martin, R.M. , pointed out that a decision in the English law reports compelled the licensee to uss greater precaution than merely asking if the man were a traveller. By the decision mentioned it devolved on the publican to ascertain the object of the traveller's visit to the town where he was supplied and where he was proceeding, in order that thirsty souls could not simply walk from their residence the necessary distance under the Act to secure a drink. To allow defendant's counsel to look up the decision he reserved judgment until to-mor-row. '■

There is said to be a good deal of destitu- : tion in Invercargill, where many people are reported to be on the verge of starvation.
