In the Legislative Assembly the Colonial Treasurer announced that there would be a credit balance on the year's operations of £3402, and the deficiency to be carried forward would be reduced to a million and a quarter sterling. The income tax would, he said, be deferred for the present. During the debate on Sir Henry Wrixon's motion thata Royal Commission be appointed to enquire into the fiscal question, the Premier moved an amendment that a Parliamentary Committee be set up to enquire into the effect of the fiscal system upon industry and production. The amendment was carried by 45 to 11. A Select Committee has been appointed to consider whether any advantageous change can be made in the present mode of conducting business in Parliament, especially with regard to the appointment of Ministers. They intend to obtain from New Zealand the result of investigation in that colony. James, the cyclist, rode 25 miles in 61 minutes, breaking the world's record. Sir M. Davies and Oas.
