In the Supreme Court, judgment was given for defendant in the case of the Commissioner of Taxes v. the Gear Meat Company, claiming £07 as tax due upon interest. The company has mortgage on its business premises, in respect of which it pays £1,320 interest, which they deducted in the returns sent the Tax Commissioner. The latter claimed tax on interest, but Judge Richmond decided otherwise. AUCKLAND, To-day. News from Samoa by the Monowai states that tliti total amount of war penalties inI flictcd was 34,100 dollars, 17,400 dollars on individuals, and on villages 1G,700 dollars. It is not expected, however, thaD this amount, or anything like it, can be collected, and it will be for the Government to consider to what extent it will be judicious to inflict the alternative penalty of land confiscation. Sir George. Grey's health is improving. Two boy burglars, aged 9 and 9^ years, have been arrested. They admit entering several shops in the City Market, and the contents of other robberies were found on them. DUNEDIN, To-day. The libel action brought by Dr. Truby King against Sydney Maxwell was concluded yesterday. Mr Justice Williams said under all the circumstances, and in view of the accused's position in life, he would iullict a fine of £2~>. On the announcement that Maxwell would be fined £25, Mr Fraser, counsel for the defence, said it would be subscribed by the public. Mr Justice Williams said if he had known that before he would have made the penalty heavier. The directors of the Globe Newspaper Company have decided to go into liquida* tion. HOKITIKA, To-dat. The libel brought by the stewards of the Greymouth Jockey Club against the publishers of the Christeluirch Press took all day. The Judge's summing up was favorable to the defendant. The jury brought in a verdict for each steward, the total amounting to £15, which carries costs. PAHIATUA, To-dat. The Star and Herald have amalgamated, the former being merged into the Herald, a lately established paper owned by a company The Star ceased publication from yesterday.
