MECCA.

WHERE THE CHOLERA COMES FROM. A TERRIBLE STATE OF FILTH. [Per R.M.S. Moxowai at Auckland.] London, Aug. 17.— 1t has been definitely asserted that Mecca is the centre from which cholera radiates, and that the Holy Well at Xein/.iu is the nucleus. In this well all the pilgrims wash themselves, believing in the efficacy of its sacred waters. The water from this holy well was analysed recently, and contained more filthy matter than is averaged in London sewer water. It showed traces of poisonous pollution equal to six times the average London sewerage. None but Mahommedans are allowed to enter Mecca, so no proper description of the horrors of the summer there have been printed. There have been 60(5(5 deaths from cholera in Mecca, and 2138 in Jeddah, hence the present epidemic has broken one.

[As showing the immense number of pilgrims who visit Mecca, 4(5,953 bound for Mecca landed at Jeddah in 1891. Of thes« 11,035 were British Indians, 10,817 were Javanese, 6285 Egyptians, 3555 Moors and Algerians, 3285 Turks and Syrians, 2086 Arabs, ISS7 from Yemen, 1717 were Persians, 1043 were Bokharians, whilst the nationalities of the others were not specified.]
