[By Telegraph. —Press Association.] AUCKLAND, To-day. 1 The committee of the Racing Club have made the bookmaker's license 20 guineas per annum, or three guineas a day. A man was charged with the larceny of a black and white tame rat, but the magistrate said that it was no use proceeding, as a conviction for the larceny of a rat would not lie. A proposal is on foot to establish a whaling and fish curing station on Meyer Island, in the KermadefS. A chief, Kakanui Wilson, has died suddenly at Mangare. News from Samoa states that twenty-four of those who took a prominent part in the recent fight have been sentenced to three years' imprisonment. Should any attempt be made to break from prison their land will be forfeited. Matthews' sawmill at Tikopuru, Kaipara, has been burned. The insurance is .£I,OOO in the New Zealand. The damage is estimated at £3,000.
