Some apprehension was caused to-day in town when news was received that the steamer Ching Tv, a Chinese trader, was apparently driving ashore near Richmond Heads. It subsequently was learnt thab the steamer had broken her shaft, but managed to anchor three miles off shore. Owing to the heavy sea which was running, fche tug which went to fche assistance of the disabled steamer, ran a great risk, but eventually succeeded in getting her in tow and reached Byron Bay. It is believed the vessel is to be taken to Brisbane. Aug. 2.— The Federation Conference ab Corowa passed resolutions calling on tho electors not to support any Government which would not place Federation in the forefront, and calling on each colony to pass a measure to elect representatives to a statutory convention for the purpose of considering and adopting a Bill to establish a federal constitution. This Bill is to be submitted by the referendum process to the verdict of each colony. The conference urged the Parliaments to pass legislation at once assimilating the various tariffs, and to enter Into a Customs Union to provide for a free interchange of local produce. The proceedings of the conference are concluded. MELBOURNE, Aug. 1. The trial of Sir M. Davies and Mr F. Miledge, in connection with the Meroan* tile Bank cases, has begun. ADELAIDE, Aug. 2. A quarter of a million of Treasury bills have been applied for twice over. HOBART, Aug. 2. A motion of want of confidence in the Government on account of the increased customs duties has been tabled. BRISBANE, Aug. 2. The Government notifies thafc all members of the Ministry have voluntarily reduced their salaries 10 per cent.
