Kapa, the Northern Maori member, believes the intention to tax the lauds of th» Maoris, means that they are to be confiscated, because it is impossible that they can pay taxes, they have ao many restrictions upon their lands, and they cannot turn them to use, and are prevented by bad laws from leasing them in Ruch a way as to procure the means of living. If the Government meant there should be equal laws for both rac«s, why, he asks, were the Maoris thus threatened ? The number of persona paying the graduated land tax is 1414, and the amount of the tax they pay is £44,996. The number of companies paying graduated land tax ia 76 ; amount of tax, L 22,884. The. total amount of tho graduated land tax is L 67.880. To the tax paid should be added LBO9, being 10 per cent, additional charge upon the tax paid late. The number of landowners exempted from the above payments is 79.233, and the amount exempted L 36,550,736. This amount includes the part of land belonging to taxable persons not liable to land tax in consequence of the deductions on account of improvemments, and the allovr anoe of exemptions under the Act,
