The Sheriff of the City of London, Alderman Joseph Renals, and Alderman Walter Heory Wilkin, have been created Knight Bichelnrs in honor of the Duke of York's wedding Mr Justice Sir R. V. Williams has sanctioned the reconstruction scheme of the London Chartered Bank of Australia. Tha appeal against the reconstruction scheme of th« English, Scottish, and Australian Bank was dismissed. Julyl4. -Several failures harp occurred on the Exchange, mninly in connection with the American market. It is stated that the books of Messrs Goldsborough; Morfc and Co., show that advances amounting to L 3,410,000 were made, and that that amount was divided 154 accounts. Ten of the largest accounts average L 139.000. Financiers in the city are in favour of the suggestion that the colonies should invite an English financial export to adviga them on the financial situation of Australasia, as suggested by Sir Reginald Earls Welby, Permanent Secretary to tho Treasury. Edward W. Hamilton, Assistant Financial Secretary to the Treasury, or Sir Robert G. Hamilton, ex-Governor of Tasmania, would be suitable gentlemen, since the possibility of securing the services of Mr Goschen, exChancellor of the Exchequer, or Sir John Lubbock is out of the question. The British Government would assist to facilitate the matter. The best critics admit that ib would be unwise for the colonies to altogether st<«p public works and tke construction of railways. Lord Justices Sir N. Lindley, Sir H. 0. Lopes, and Sir A. L. Smith, in dismissing the appeal against the reconstruction scheme of the English, Scottish, and Australian Chartered Bank, considered the only way to pay the creditors of the bank w»« by keeping the institution open. The Chamber of Deputies by a majority of 72 resolved on the total repeal of the duties on wines, beer, and cider, in lieu of the partial repeal proposed by the Government.
