Auckland, to-day.

The case for the defence in the Waikomiti murder trial closed last evening. For the defence several medical men gave evideuce to show that the earlier illnesses from which Thompson suffered before his last illness, which resulted in his death, might have been due to ptomaines, from eating bad meat, and not from mineral poisoning, aa was suggested by the medical witnesses for the Crown. Evidence was also given to show that Thompson had been in financial difficulties, the property being mortgaged, and he had been in depressed spirits. Tho trial will probably close to-day.
