Police Changes.

WbUjINGTON, to-day. — The following are the changes in the polite inspectors : Inspector Broham goes from Auckland to Christchurch, Thomson from Wellington to New Plymouth, Pender from Christchurch to Wellington, Hickson from Dunedin to Auckland, Pardy from New Plymouth to Dunedin. Inspector Emenon, now stationed in Waikato, makes his headquarters at Napier. A portion of New Plymouth district will be attached to Napier, and part of Waikato district to Auckland. The only inspector not removed is McGovern, who remains in charge of the West Coast and Nelson.

Fogs as dark as midnight had prevailed in London prior to the departure of the 'Frisco mail.

Several outrages by brigands are reported from Poland. One family of six were murdered and robbed in a village hotel. The murderers have been arrested.

The lowest estimate of Jay Gould's fortune is 32,000,000. His death flattened the stock market, which, however, soon regained its firmness. It is reported that Mr Asquith, Home Secretary, intends to introduce a Bill to amend the Employers' Liability Act, and is conferring with mastors and men on the subject.

It is reported that France is supplying Russia with a million Lebel rifles. The Russian gunmakers are also increasing the output.

The Peninsular and Oriental Steamship Company, in its annual report, shows si surplus of £180,000. The direct freight earnings have fallen off by £50,000, and the revenue derived from the passenger traffic by £10,000. The latter has been sustained in Australian trade.

The managers of an electric apparatus recently made an experiment at Earl's Court, London, and succeeded in throwing distinct forms of gigantic letters on the clouds, as well as making the features of Mr Gladstone appear in ghostly outline in the heavens. Mr Nelson, one of the well-known firm of Edinburgh publishers, has bequeathed the sum of £50,000 to a workmen's club in Edinburgh, and £20,000 to charities in the same city. Mails by the P. and O. Co.'s Himalaya reached London from Bombay in 13£ days, which is the shortest time on record.

The Japanese ship run down by the Ravenna was the Chishima, a steel despatch boat of 750 tons. The Ra/enna — which rescued 14 of her crew, including the captain — is being repaired at Nagasaki. Prince George, the Heir- Apparent, will marry Princess May during May, 1893, probably at Westminster, and the occasion will be made a grand national fete. Rumors were current in London on Nov. 12fch, that Lord Rosebery, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and Princess Victoria, the eldest unmarried daughter of the Prince of Wales, were betrothed.

A Masterton fisherman discovered a fine rock of greenstone some miles up the Waingawa river on Sunday. Specimens have been brought in. At the meeting of the New Zealand Midland Railway Company last week the chairman said the profit for the year was £2800. There remained unsold of the lan d grant earned £2/5,000 worth.
