(Press Association— Electric Telegraph— Copyright. SYDNEY, Oct. 3. Several of the smelters at the Proprietary and other mines have begun operations. The s.s. Wairarapa picked up a thirty-two foot, half-decked ceutre-board boat the day after leaving Auckland. It was clinker built, and had an old plough on board. There was no name on the boat. Late this evening the ship Brilliant, IGI3 tons, which lately arrived from London, caught fire in Darling harbor, but no particulars were to hand when the cable closed. (Reoeived October i, noon.) Oct. 4. — The Medical Congress has closed. The trial of the directors of the Australian Banking Company has begun. It is expected to occupy several days. The fire on board the British ship Brilliant in Darling harbor has been extinguished. With the exception of a twenty-two tons disappearing gun and a quantity of non-inflammable material, all the cargo had been discharged. The lire broke out amongst the dunnage wood, and a quantity of ropes and sails were destroyed. The damage has not yet been estimated, but it is not likely to be large.
