Wellington, to-day.— The North Island Trunk Railway Committee have concluded taking evidence and are likely to report tomorrow adverse to both routes, and suggesting that in the meanwhile the expenditure be restricted to opening roads for settlement ■ purposes. Mr Ballance was able to chat freely with a number of intimate friends yesterday, but is not quite so well to-day. This afternoon will be occupied with consideration of the report by the Native Affairs Committe on John Lundon's case. The Native Lands Validation Bill in committee and the Payment of Members Bill (2nd reading) are to be taken to-night. The Colonial Secretary has ruled that where programmes were issued prior to tho receipt of the Metropolitan Conference Rules it is not necessary to raise the stakes for that meeting to £300. Tho free conference on the Electoral Bill sat for an hour and a lialf in the forenoon, but engaged merely in preliminary skirmishing, adjonrning wheu the vital clauses were reached till 10.30 to-morrow. The question of electoral rights for women aud single electorates will then be considered. Wellington, thifi afternoon. Sir George Grey tin's afternoon gave notice of his intention to move a number of amendments to the Validation of Titles Bill. This Bill comes on for committal to-night, and is expected to meet with much obstruction. Its chances of ultimately passing arc v«»ry small. Mr Kapa has given notice of motion that Government should immediately take steps to recover from John Lundon £783 illegally obtained from Natives. A brisk discussion on Lundon's case is taking place this afternoon.
