Church of England Missionary Society.

GisßOKXfi is about to be visited by two gentlemen -Mr Eugene Stock and the Rev. R. W. Stewart — who have been spending tho last four months in New South Wales and Victoria, working as a deputation from the Church Missionary Society in England. They are now visiting New Zealand, and will go from hence to Tasmania. The occasion and object of | their visit may be gathered from the following extract from a paper which has recently been circulated in Australia : — " The New South Wales auxiliary to the Church Missionary Society, which has been in existence for more than sixty years, sent last year to the Society in London ' an earnest request that a deputation might be sent out from England for the twofold purpose of stirring up a missionary spirit, and of promoting arrangements for sending forth missionaries direct from Australia. The parent Society responded by sending out its editorial secretary, Mr Eugene Stock, and one of its missionaries to China, the Rev. R. W. Stewart, and by expressing through them its readiness to adopt plans under which missionaries might be selected, and (if need be) trained iv Australia, and then sent into the mission field to work under the direction of the parent Committee, but to be maintained by the Australian Association. The deputation were instructed by the London Committee, and it has been their own desire and purpose to plead the claims, not of the Church Missionary Society in particular, but of tho missionary cause as a whole. They have expressed warm interest in tbe missionary work already carried on by the Church in Australia, namely, the missions to the Chinese in the colonies, to the aborigines, to New Guinea, Melanesia, &c. At the same time, while acknowledging the pressing claims upon our sympathy of the heathen near our own doors, the delegates lay stress, and we would lay stress, upon the universality of the great commission given to the Church by her Divine Master. The whole Church is to care for tho whole world. Even if Christians think it right to concentrate their money gifts upon one portion of the mission field, they are to embrace the whole in their sympathy and prayers. The delegates from England, therefore, have not come to raise funds for the Church Missionary Society, but in the name of that Society, to help us in Australia to take our part in the evangelization of the world." Tho object of the deputation in coming to New Zealand is the same as that which brought them to Australia. They are expected to arrive here by the Te Anau to-morrow, and proceed on to Napier by the Southern Cross on Wednesday. Sermons will be preached by one or both in Holy Trinity Church on Sunday, and a meeting in connection with the local Missionary Association probably on Monday evening, which will be open to all who may wish to attend it. Mr Stock is the author of the well-known series of Sunday School lessons published by the Church of England Sunday School Institute, and it is£hoped that during his stay he may give a model lesson for the benefit of the local Sunday School teachers, as well a« a lecture on Bible study, in addition to addresses on the missionary work of the Church.
